System Explorer a better Task Manager?
Today I am going to write about a tool called System Explorer.
Compared to the basic Task Manager of Windows it has additionally a few useful features, which may interest you. The most interesting features are:
- Identify files with an external library
- Listing processes in a tree (parent->children view)
- Loaded modules and their owner
- Extended performance monitoring with history lookup
- Controling startups
- System snapshot feature, to detect changes in your system
- Extensible with plugins
- Ability to control windows services *1
- Connection overview (a graphical frontend for netstat -a -b -o) *2
Perhaps you have recognized that *1 and *2 are well known features of the actual Windows Task Manager. But not prior Windows OS Version 5.2. It is a good addition for people using these older systems.
If you really like it, you are able to replace the original Windows Task Manager by setting this under Options->Replace. Officially just Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 2000 are supported. While writing this article I was able to run the Beta 1 and integrate it in Windows 7.
